Technology Tree Monthly Update (August 2020)

Hello from the team @ Technology Tree

Welcome back to our August edition. As we are approaching the end of the Winter season, we hope everyone has been keeping well whilst adjusting to the new normal. Sending a virtual hug to all our Victorians who are staying strong through another wave of difficult times.

Through these challenging times, we are staying positive and the team are keeping busy helping businesses adapt by structuring and implementing new ways to assist with the changing environments.

NOTIFIABLE DATA BREACHES

There has been a new half-yearly (Jan-Jun 2020) report that was released from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner which captures and reports on notifications received under the Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme.

The snapshot shows more than half of the notified data breaches have been malicious or criminal attack related with the remainder being human error or a system fault. Many of the cyber incidents during this period appear to involve a human factor such as clicking phishing emails or disclosing passwords.

As many of the cyber incidents during this period appear to involve a human factor, such as clicking phishing emails or disclosing passwords, we encourage you to check before you click and keep your information confidential, from unwanted attention.

Windows Users
It is very important to ensure your devices are being updated which should be happening automatically even whilst working from home, depending on your home internet. Most of you should have the latest Windows 10 version 2004. If you want to know more about what is new in this version click here. We are now seeing that most modern devices are now supported including the new surface models.

Patch Tuesday: Microsoft regularly releases software patches usually every second Tuesday of every month for its software products. Please make sure you apply and restart you computer this week to have these updates applied to your device. For those of you who we managed under or service agreement we will be monitoring and will be in touch if there not being applied.

How to update: Allow yourself at least 10 – 15 minutes to fully shutdown and restart your system. This ensures patches are applied, this can also address (and solve) some problems you may be having with your system. You can also manually check by following steps that can be found here.
