Hello from the team @ Technology Tree

To keep up to date with what’s happening in the IT world on a regular basis, follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Scam Awareness Week

Scams Awareness Week 2021 takes place 8-12 November. The campaign seeks to encourage everyone to start a conversation about scams to reduce stigma and help people recognise a scam sooner, or prevent scams from happening in the first place.

Scams cost Australian consumers, businesses, and the economy hundreds of millions of dollars each year and cause serious emotional harm to victims and their families. In 2020 Australians made more than 216,000 reports to Scamwatch and reported losses of around $178 million. By the end of September this year, Australians had lost even more: Scamwatch received more than 226,000 reports with reported losses of over $222 million.

As alarming as these numbers are, it’s estimated that around one third of people who are scammed never tell anyone, so the true numbers are probably much higher. One of the reasons someone who’s been scammed might not report it is that people can feel shame or embarrassment about what has happened to them. However, by talking about scams we can reduce the stigma and work together to stop them.

Visit the Scam Watch website to find out how best to start a conversation about scams and view a range of tools and resources available. While we utilise the latest IT security features to keep our clients safe, it always pays to be vigilant.

There was some exciting and innovative content covered over the 3 day event which we are looking forward to implementing.

REMINDER!

Windows Users
It is very important to ensure your devices are being updated which should be happening automatically even whilst working from home, depending on your home internet. The latest version is Windows 10 version 21H1. If you want to know more about what is new in this version click here.

Patch Tuesday: Microsoft regularly releases software patches usually every second Tuesday of every month for its software products. Please make sure you apply and restart you computer this week to have these updates applied to your device. For those of you who we managed under a service agreement we will be monitoring and will be in touch if they’re not being applied.

How to update: Allow yourself at least 10 – 15 minutes to fully shutdown and restart your system. This ensures patches are applied, this can also address (and solve) some problems you may be having with your system. You can also manually check by following steps that can be found here.
